The county folks came out to the house today to do a full evaluation on Maiya. With kids this young, they do a complete evaluation of all developmental areas. It was nice to see that she was on target for all of the areas of development except for language. (She was in the 24 month range for social skills - I'm so proud!)
There needs to be a developmental delay of 30% in one area (hers being speech) in order to qualify for services. Maiya had a 33% delay in the communication section, which combines both receptive (what she understands) and expressive (what she can say) language. They recommended starting her with play therapy. A therapist will come to our house and play with Maiya while trying to get her to do certain things and make certain sounds. It's all very fun and playful, which is why they use this kind of therapy (rather than sit down at a table and "work") with kids Maiya's age. I have a meeting next Wednesday with our coordinator so that we can go over the evaluation and set up a time for Maiya's therapy to begin. The therapy is in our home, so we won't have to go anywhere - SO nice! That's the update for Miss Maiya. With all of this help, she should be talking our ears off in no time!

Speech Therapy
Maiya's speech therapy started today. She went back with the therapist easily and played for 30 minutes. She is working on learning more of her body parts, saying words with two consonant sounds (ex: mama, baba, etc.), and saying "environmental sounds" such as animal sounds, "beep, beep," etc.
We are hopeful that she will start to use more sounds and words so that she can be less frustrated and can tell us what she wants!

Sunday Fun
I took the boys to see a children's theater play on Sunday. We rode the light rail train downtown and visited the children's theater and library.
Evan was "in a book" and was pretending to be a lion. *Please note that he is wearing one glove. Just one. The other hand wasn't cold.

3-D Puzzle
Luke got a 3-D puzzle for his birthday and tonight we put it together. It was tricky at first, but once he got the hang of it, he really enjoyed it. The best part is that it is an I Spy puzzle, so once we were finished we were able to look for all of the things that were listed on the puzzle. Very fun!

Park Playdate
We met up with some friends at the park today. It is beautiful weather today and the kids were in great moods for our play time.
I even got them to play together for a brief, shining minute.
We brought our lunch and had a picnic lunch before coming home. It was a great day!

Singing
Evan was doing everything he could to NOT fall asleep tonight. We heard him singing upstairs in his bed, so I went up to check on him. He asked me to stay in his room until he fell asleep. I said no, but I would stay while he sang me his song. He said this was his "favowite" (favorite) song.

After he sung the song, I asked if he was ready to go to sleep yet. His answer was, "My bones are not strong enough to take a nap. We should pick them up and put them on your bones."
Not quite sure what he was talking about, but he looked so serious when he said it, so I tried not to laugh before I kissed him and left the room. Evan makes me laugh on a daily basis!

Fabric Shopping
My awesome friend Kelleigh took me fabric shopping yesterday and WOW, was I overwhelmed! The place she took me was a giant warehouse that had every kind of fabric you could imagine. Since I didn't know exactly what we needed, or what I wanted, it took me for-ev-er to make a decision! Kelleigh was great in giving me her suggestions and then forcing me to make my own decisions!
This is a picture of one part of the quilt next to the light yellow fabric and the purple fabric that we choose.
This is the giant roll of the soft yellow that will be on the back side of the quilt. (Do you see how HUGE this place is???)
This is Isabel, who cut our miles and miles of fabric for us. She was very serious about her job and took her time.
This is a fabric that I loved, but just didn't go with the rest of the quilt. I was so sad that we wouldn't be able to use it for this, so I had to give it a hug before we put it away.
Kelleigh took home the fabrics and put them out on her floor so we could see how they looked together. This is the quilt, with the thin yellow border and then the thick purple border. I think it is beautiful and I'm so excited to see it all put together. The back side of the quilt will be a soft yellow.

Speech Evaluation #1
Maiya had her first speech evaluation today. It was with a private agency that our pediatrician recommended. They were very nice and helpful and gave us tips on what to do at home, etc.
They said her receptive language skills (what she understands) are at about the 12-15 month old level, and her expressive language (what she actually says) is 6-12 months old. They are recommending her starting therapy for 30 minutes once a week.
We have another evaluation with the state (that is free) on March 30. I'll be interested to see what they recommend.
We are going to wait and see what the next evaluation says and then decide if we want to go with the free program (state) or the private program (which we would have to pay for). It will depend on the quality of services and what they suggest. We might even do both.

My big kid
Luke has been taking taekwondo class for over a year. Last September, we switched TKD schools and have been very happy with the change. We were happy with the training Luke was getting for awhile, but as he got into the higher belts, we felt that they simply gave him a new belt color after a certain amount of time and not because he had actually learned the skills. When we moved to the new school, the instructor explained to Luke that he would have to go back and "prove" that he knew the lower belt skills before he would be promoted to the next level. It has taken 6 months, but he finally has caught back up to where he should be, and he has finally earned his self defense stripe for the high yellow belt. All he needs to learn is his poomse (an 18 step sequence of skills) and he will be able to test for his green belt.
I am so proud of him for working so hard on re-learning all of these skills and not giving up.
Tonight Luke and I went out on a date to tcby. I let him make his own bowl and put all of his own toppings on. It was giant. He was very excited.
He's a good kid.

Some randoms
Someone I recently met at the library asked if I "ever took pictures of my kids."
I laughed.
Um... yeah. Sometimes.

This is my girl dressed as Lightening McQueen. What do you expect from a girl with two older brothers?
Luke came from school one day this week and as he got off the bus, he walked up to one of the trees in our front yard. He gazed at it, in an almost *proud* way, smiled, and then hugged the tree. I asked him what he was doing and he looked at me with pure joy and said, "It's blooming!" He's a tree hugger. I love that.
I laughed.
